Some of the oldest jewellery recorded in history have their origins in Egypt. During this period, certain countries in Europe began the mass manufacture of jewellery. The lower technology of the period meant that these mass produced items were of inferior quality. Some women rebelled against this trend by refusing to wear jewellery.

Mass production processes had improved significantly early in the 20th century. Accordingly mass produced jewellery improved significantly in quality. What is now known as costume jewellery started to gain popularity and was strongly promoted by some of the top fashion houses of Europe.

The popularity of Hollywood celebrities in the mid 20th century had a major influence on fashion in Europe and around the world. Imitations of jewellery and clothes worn by the stars became very popular. In America, costume jewellery finally gained the same acceptance as their genuine counterparts. By the last quarter of the century, this trend had extended to the rest of the modern world.
